Dr Seuss would be proud

Spore is an amazing game giving us control over generations of creatures of our own design. I mean the possibilities are inconceivable. But that's not entirely true; there was one visionary who saw the possibilities that Spore allows far earlier than Will Wright ever saw them. That man was Dr. Seuss and he made hundreds of strange creatures. Now they're all possible with Spore; let's take a look at a Dr. Seuss based evolutionary path, complete with Seuss-like instructions.

Spore Game

Dr. Seuss didn't really have anything like the cell in his books but you might consider yourself an Oobleck, a green sticky thing that stuck to everything after it was summoned by the bored King.

It's wasn't rain, nor was it snow, but something new like green sticky dough. It gummed up this, and gummed up that, it even gummed up Bartholomew's hat. So color your cell a sickly green, make it sticky and make it mean. Stick it to everything nearby and soon it's ready to multiply.

Moving on, the next evolution could be to One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish.

So take your green sticky cell, give it fins, eyes, head and tail. Turn it blue or maybe red, just as Dr. Seuss had said. Let it swim and eat and grow and soon enough it's time to go. To change into the next thing, it might have feet or just one wing. We won't find out until it's done but I am sure it will be fun.

Now it's time to leave the sea so we need legs and arms at least. The next step in the Seuss evolution might be the beach-dwelling, star-bellied Sneetches. Of course you might not be able to find a star to put on the belly but no matter, a Sneetch with no star is the same as a Sneetch with a star.

So pluck off the fins and tail that's there, give it a long neck, arms, legs and hair. A white neck fringe and color it green-yellow, a long pointed nose now that's a good fellow. Move to the beach where Sneetches live and give it a star, if you've one to give.

Spore Game

Of course you don't want to spend the rest of the evolutionary ladder living on the beaches and might one day want to wander into that nearby forest. That brings us to the very next step, the Lorax.

Shorten your Sneetch and make it fat, move the neck fringe to his lip with a pat. Change it to orange from its old color, the mustache yellow but a bit duller. Height and muscles, that’s what it lax, a short fat orange fellow called the Lorax.

When you’re ready to settle down remember the Whos down in Who-Ville. They showed up in several Seuss books and seemed to be wonderful builders and will put you on the road to civilization. The Whos lived in a city of Who-Ville at the foot of Mount Crumpit. Don't wander up the mountain because you may run into the Grinch.

Take your old Lorax and stretch him thin, slide the mustache down to his chin. Pull on his arms, legs and hair and pull hard enough so that he is bare. Pink or peach is the skin's color, don't pinch too hard or he might holler. Give him some clothes and something to do, now you've got yourself a new Who.

Of course you can't control everything else that shows up in your world but who knows, maybe a Grinch or an elephant named Horton will randomly show up. Dr. Seuss would be proud indeed.
