Why Spore Is Taking So Long |
|
When you look at what Will Wright is hoping to accomplish in this game, would have been impossible even just a decade ago. His early description of it by calling it "Sim Everything" seems like it will be an accurate label.
Why is "Sim Everything" taking so long to happen? Newsweek has an Exclusive with Will Wright. In short here is the review of the article:
Every creature in the game you create generates a card; this gets added to the Sporepedia.
Sporepedia may be browsed at any time in the game.
Players can look at what their friends have created; subscribe to Sporecasts, and participate in Spore social networks.
You can prioritise creatures that gets used in your games, such as tedy bairs or human or any other spore cast.
Players will select difficulty levels: easy, medium or hard.
Machinima will be possible. Players can capture game footage at any time.
There's a one-button upload to send your movies to YouTube.
Half of the music is now procedurally generated within the game based upon things you make.
Mac content can be shared with PC players and vice versa. As previously discussed on UrSpore Mac and PC versions are the same code. Mac version is wrapped code to port to the Mack machines.
Spore DS will feature a custom look with artistic inspiration from Japanese flat rod puppets and shadow box art. More on this soon.
We have those who complain about game companies releasing a product before it's ready, and then we've got those who complain that a product is taking too long to come out. Obviously it is quite likely now that Spore will be the later, its taking quite sometime and we're not getting any younger dam it.
Has it taken a long time from concept to completion? Yeah, that's a pitfall they've encountered. Maybe their timing is good, though - the MMO world has calmed down a bit, the Wii isn't as brand-spanking-new, people have finished Bioshock. Now here is something new to anticipate.
If the game is good enough, it doesn't matter when it's released - it's not going to miss the boat because it's not trying to ride a fad. In the meantime, we can still play the games we've been playing. No need to hop from one game to the next constantly, just sit back and enjoy what you're playing. When Spore comes out, you'll be ready for it.
